Intense aromas of violet, lavender and dark, rich fruits draw the nose into this bottling from a region where Syrah tends to age with remarkable intrigue and grace. Blackberry and more purple-flower flavors pop on the palate, which will only grow more cohesive, gamy and interesting with patience. Drink 2025-2041.

As to the 2021 Syrah Santa Lucia Highlands, it's a classic Syrah from California with its peppery, smoky black fruit, game, violet, and spring flower-driven aromatics. There's a hint of Côte Rôtie in its floral aromatics, but it brings classic Cali fruit and texture on the palate, with a voluptuous mouthfeel, solid underlying tannins, and outstanding length.

Luli's 2021 Syrah (Santa Lucia Highlands) is a potent, brooding wine. Super-ripe dark cherry, blackberry, spice, leather, tobacco and incense race out of the glass. This boisterous Syrah shows quite a bit of intensity but is not exactly finessed, especially in its rather burly contours. More should be possible here.
