Brand Karl Schaefer

Mineral aroma, some flint and matchstick, plus exotic fruits, some mango, multilayered, dried herbs. On the palate with gripping acidity, citrus dominates, a lot of traction, has almost something purist, consistently dry, good structure and length, has character.

Founded in 1843, Weingut Karl Schaefer experienced its first heyday under the leadership of its later namesake, Karl Schaefer. Today the winery is run by the sixth generation of the family - Dr. Job and Nana von Nell, supported by a young team dedicated to tradition. From the very beginning, Weingut Karl Schafer has been one of the leading producers of Riesling, has been not only a member of the VDP Winery Association for over 100 years, but also one of its founders, and also advocates consistent environmental management. The winery's philosophy plays a central role in connection with nature, sustainable vineyard management and the production of distinctive terroir wines - the result is extremely well received by connoisseurs and critics.

The Karl Schafer winery and its very beautiful park were designed by the Karlsruhe architect Friedrich Weinbrenner, who was an urban planner and master of classical architecture. His work is listed as a historical monument and is located in the center of Bad Dürkheim. 85% of Karl Schaefer's vineyards are terraced, with 8 different sites classified as VDP. There was no land consolidation here, so the unique landscape between Haardt and the Rhine Valley was preserved in its natural state. 6 hectares of this unique landscape of wine culture are located on the territory of "Fuchsmantel" and belong to the Erste Lage class. The image of "Fuchsmantel" and its turret with a flag adorn the labels of Karl Schaefer wines.

The Karl Schafer winery is committed to the ecological management of the terraced areas - after all, they are among the last remaining original cultural landscapes of the Palatinate. Rare animals and plants find refuge here, and the soil, thanks to the careful care of the vines, produces high-quality harvests. The main aim is to highlight the features and differences of the soils, which range from basalt to loess, Banter sandstone to shell limestone. The organic approach preserves the authenticity of the vineyards and a well-functioning ecosystem. The emphasis on manual labor and careful processing in the cellar results in the creation of superb wines with excellent potential. A significant contribution to this is made by the ancient cellar from the 17th century and selected yeast strains. The wines are carefully fermented in stainless steel tanks or wooden barrels and given as much time and freedom as they need.

Thanks to the diversity of soils, the Karl Schafer winery produces multi-faceted wines. Despite the fact that the assortment clearly specializes in Riesling, wines from other grape varieties are also very interesting.
